Describe the powers of Scotland’s First Minister -6 marks
Representing Scotland at events within the UK and abroad. eg. Salmond visited NY for Scotland week in America. Nicola Sturgeon recent meeting with David Cameron after General Election 2015.
Patronage - hiring and firing people/ promoting and demoting eg. Stewart Stevenson got demoted from Transport Minister after the dangers of powerful snow storms that transport were not prepared for. Patronage is important as they have control over other peoples careers.
Set agenda at cabinet meetings. Formulating and introducing new policies
Why do people think that more powers should be devolved to Scotland? -6 marks
Scottish people have demonstrated that they want more powers. This is shown by the results on the General Election 2015- 56 out of 59 seats were taken by SNP.
Scotland usually votes differently from other countries in the UK. This has been shown in 2010 and 2015 when Scotland elected only one Conservative MP and yet the Conservatives formed the UK government after both of these elections.
Scottish government controls key issues in Scotland like Health and Education but they don’t control the budgets for these areas which is unfair and confusing.
Explain why social inequalities exist in the USA. -6 marks
Health- the cost of private insurance because they don’t have something like NHS. Ethnic minorities have less access.
Housing- poorer area means less wealthy and higher crime rates in these areas (usually black or hispanic)
Education- schools in poorer areas get fewer resources and less qualified teachers. poorer area means lower standard. Low scores for blacks and hispanics and most whites graduate high school.
How do people participate in politics in the USA?
Voting- Most basic form. The USA has more elections than any other country. some include: Local, state, Congress, Senate, Presidential
Join an interest group- participate in marches, demonstrations, petitions. eg. NRA, Emily’s List, Fight for 15.
Canvassing- knocking on doors, delivering leaflets, phoning voter during election campaigns.
