Modern Period Flashcards
Government
The government took an active role in the healthcare of the people and the advice they give to keep people healthy.
Genetics
In 1902, it was written that some disease might be unique to a patient based on the pathways in their body.
1953 - DNA is the body’s genetic code and can be “unzipped” and past down through generations.
The hunt was on to discover diseases that can be handed down.
We better understood: Parkinson’s and Dementia.
Salvarsan 606
The world’s first successful chemical cure for a disease. It cured syphilis. It meant that people no longer had to rely on herbal remedies and potentially poisonous arsenic compounds.
NHS
Healthcare paid for through taxes. Organised hospitals. The poor no longer relied on charity. Government funding meant hospitals could access new high-tech science and tech.
Science and Tech in the 20th century
Have allowed for better imaging of the body and even x-rays that can shrink tumours. Have allowed for inventions like a dialysis machine which washes blood when kidneys don’t work. Has allowed for the massive production of medicines in huge numbers so lots of people have access.
Factors helping Penicillin
Fleming, Florey and Chain. The US government funded Florey for five years. Mass production allowed for pure penicillin to be produced. World War Two created an urgent attitude for penicillin to be widely available.
Factors helping the fight against Lung Cancer.
CT Scans and PET CT Scans to analyse cells. To stain potentially cancerous cells. To allow patients access to healthy lungs.
1965: banned advertising on TV.
2007: Smoking Ban in public places.
