A

door handles, belt buckles, nuts and bolts

28
Q

what is polymer-coated steel

A

a coating of a thermoforming polumer applied to hot metal

29
Q

properties of polymer-coated steel

A

prevents corrosion and alter the appearnace of the base metal

30
Q

uses of polymer-coated steel

A

tool handles

31
Q

whats a smart material

A

a materia that reacts to the enviromental changes such as heat and light

32
Q

what are shape memory alloys (SMAs)

A

a metal that will return to its original shape when placed in hot water or heated

33
Q

whats a thermmochromatic material

A

a meterial that reacts to heat for example a baby spoon that changes colour pigment when its to hot

34
Q

whats a photochromic material

A

a material that reacts to light for example sunlasses that change pigment based on light intensity

35
Q

what is polymorth

A

a plymer that can be shaped and reshaped many times when warmed to 62 c the polymorth becomes flexible and easy to mould into the desired shape it sets as it cools an dbecoms stiff and strong it can be used for making pespoke shapes such as ergonomic handles it is usefulf for making prototype mecanical parts and for making molds

36
Q

what is qtc

A

quantum tunneling composite is a flexible polymer with tiny metla particles embeddded into it. when it is squeexed pressure fores the praticles togehte randa currne tof electrons flows between the neighboring particles. th eprocess of eeectron jumping across a gap frome one condtucting material to another is known as quantup tunneling. it is used in micros witches ,outdoor items that may be affected by water and touch sensitive pads

37
Q

what is glass reinforced plastic

A

grp is a polyester material reinforced with the addition of glass fibre. it is produced by combining thermos setting polyester resin and glass fibre matting making a storn and lightweigh composite. grp is used in the manufacture of circuit boards, in the marine idustry for boat hulls and in the customkit car market

38
Q

what is carbon fibre

A

carbon fibre reinforce platsic is a thermosplastic reainfroced with carbon fibres. it has a high streght to weigh ratio and is very rigid. it is used in aerospace engineering fro fuselae compnetsm formula one vechile chassis and many items of sports equipment

39
Q

what is a composite material

A

a material which contains two or more different materiasl that are combined to create a material with iproved properties and functionality

40
Q

what is gor-tex

A

gortex is a fabric with breathable yet waterproof properties it allow vapour produced by the wearer to escape yet repels water making it an effective waterproof fabric commonly used for outdoor clothing

41
Q

what is kevlar

A

a plastic fibre with high tesile strength. it is heat resistant and extremely hard wearing. it is a flexible and lightweigh synthetic fibre from the class of fibres known as aramids which are modified polyamide fibres. polyamide molecules connect to form long chains. these are aligned parallel to each other isndi the fibres actind as reinforment to give kevlar its strength. kevlar fibres ae so tigtly spun that it’s nearly impossible to seperate them
