What were Alexander Fleming’s contributions to medicine?

A

Penicillin - He went on holiday and left out petri dishes and upon his return, noticed that a mould had been killing the staphylococci that was growing there. He revolutionised battlefield medicine.

How did Florey & Chain contribute to medicine?

A

Discovered that penicillin was safe to use upon mice
The first human to be tested upon was a policeman. His infection improved for a short while, but there was not enough penicillin to cure him, meaning he died.

A

Immunity - He worked out how to treat and counteract diphtheria by transferring blood with antibodies in.

A

Prontosil ( - A red dye that would cure mice and rabbits of staphylococci and haemolytic streptococci. He tested it upon his daughter as a last resort. She made a full recovery.

How did Aneurin Bevan contribute to medicine?

A

NHS - He founded the NHS, put the National Insurance Act in place (This is considered the building block of the Welfare State)
The National Health Service Act was introduced in 1948, which stated that free medical diagnosis and treatment was allowed.
The NHS became fully operational July 5th, 1948
