Models Of Hazard Management Flashcards
What does the park model show?
The different phases of response to a hazard.
What are the 5 phases of the park model?
1) Pre-Disaster
2) Disruption
3) Relief
4) Rehabilitation
5) Reconstruction
Describe the pre-disaster phase of the park model.
Before the event when the situation is normal.
Describe the disruption phase of the park model.
During or directly after the event has occurred. There is destruction of property and loss of life.
Describe the relief phase of the park model.
The aftermath of the event. Rescue occurs now and efforts are in saving lives and preventing further damage.
Describe the rehabilitation phase of the park model.
Once the immediate impacts are resolved then longer term problems can be resolved. Eg: temporary shelters and aid.
Describe the reconstruction phase of the park model.
Rebuilding permanent houses and infrastructure. Results can return to the same standard as before or be a higher standard than before.
How can the park model help management of future hazards?
Shows how response progresses during a disaster. Planners can predict what resources may be needed at each phase and prepare for future hazard events.
What are the four stages of the hazard management cycle?
1) Mitigation
2) Preparedness
3) Response
4) Recovery
Describe the mitigation stage of the hazard management cycle.
Minimising the impacts of future disasters. Eg: building flood defences or fire-resistant roofs. Mitigation can happen before or after a hazard occurs.
Describe the preparedness stage of the hazard management cycle.
Planning how to respond to a hazard. Eg: warning systems and education on evacuation.
Describe the response stage of the hazard management cycle.
How people react when a disaster occurs. Eg: emergency services rescuing trapped people or evacuating them.
Describe the recovery stage of the hazard management cycle.
Returning affected areas back to normal. Eg: rebuilding homes and restoring services such as medical centres and electricity.
Why is the hazard management cycle a cycle?
Hazards are constantly occurring so efforts to prepare or mitigate their affects should be constant.
