Models Flashcards
What does complementary mean?
Where structures match to each other exactly (e.g substrate and active site)
What is a substrate?
A chemical reactant that an active site on an enzyme will bind to
What is an active site?
The 3D shape of an enzyme that the substrate will bind to
What do the substrate and active site form to make?
Enzyme substrate complex
How do an enzymes’ properties relate to its tertiary structure?
Active site is determined by tertiary structure - unique as only one substrate will fit
Primary structure is determined by a gene (mutation = different enzymes)
Tertiary structure may be altered by changes in pH or temp
Active site changes = ESC less readily available
AS changes shape - substrate won’t fit - enzyme cannot function
What is the lock and key model?
This model proposes that enzymes work in the same way as a key operates only a single lock
A substrate will only fit the active site of one particular enzyme
What is the induced fit model?
The active site molds around the substrate to be complementary and form the enzyme-substrate complex
