Modeling Chemical Reactions Flashcards
Reactants
The substances present before the reaction on the left side of the reaction arrow
Products
The substances present after the reaction on the right of the reaction arrow
A skeleton equation
A chemical equation that does not indicate the relative amounts of the reactants and products.
Material State
Reactants and products can be represented as s g l or aq
Law of conservation of mass
Is a fundamental law of nature that states that matter is conserved, which means that during any chemical reaction the mass will always equal to the mass of the reactants.
Coefficients
Numbers in front of terms that are added to balance skeleton equation
Chemical potential energy
The energy stored in the bonds of a substance
Law of conservation of energy
State that in any chemical reaction energy is neither created nor destroyed
Exothermic
Reaction that release net energy to the surroundings
Endothermic
Reaction that absorb energy from the surroundings
Collision theory
States that bonds are broken when molecules collide with enough energy
Reaction rate
The speed at which reactants become products is called the reaction rate.
