Modalities Test Flashcards
What are the three types of wound drainage?
Perulent = Cloudy and Smelly (sign of infection)
Serous = Loose and Clear
Serosanguinous = Has blood in it
What are the two types of scars?
Adherent = stuck to the tissue underneath
Keloid = raised above the tissue.
What is the most effective way to use a hot pack?
Don’t just let them sit there with the heat, best way to utilize the time is to simultaneously stretch while they are being heated (ex: put a heating pack under their arm and give them weight to hold in order to stretch wrist)
What is the main and most effective use for a whirlpool and why?
For wound debridement, its not effective for heat because it does not stay hot long enough.
What is a benefit of paraffin?
It conforms to the joints and distributes heat evenly around the extremity. Can be taken off and then patient can squeeze for strengthening exercise.
What can be a benefit of fluidotherapy besides heat?
Can be used for hyposensitive scars. Client can start at the top where there is less sensory input and work down to the bottom where there is more sensory input.
When is the best time to use ice or heat for pain?
Acute pain or injury = ice at first
Chronic pain or injury = heat
How does ultrasound work?
Produces sound waves which delivers deep heat to the tissues.
What level of sound waves go deepest with ultrasound?
1mhz goes deeper than 3mhz
What is the purpose of thermal ultrasound?
Increases blood flow
reduces muscle spasms
Increases extensibility of tissues
What is the purpose of non-thermal ultrasound?
Treats soft tissue lesions. Used for acute injury.
What is the purpose of different size trandusers with ultrasounds?
The larger the treatment area the larger the transduser.
The treatment area should be 4X larger than the transduser.
What is phonophoresis?
It is a form of ultrasound that delivers medication into the tissue.
What are 2 contraindications of phonophoresis?
Burn on the bone
Cavitation: Air bubbles in the blood that can explode
What are the 3 types of Estim that is A/C?
TENS
MNMES
Interferential
