Modalities Flashcards
what is the role of PAMs in OT rehab?
used before/after tasks to compliment intervention plan for strengthening stretching neuro-muscular re-education manual therapy
what dx is PAM’s good for?
soft tissue injury
acute/chronic pain
impaired muscle fx
what are PAM’s?
interventions that produce response in soft tissue through use of light, water, temp, sound, electricity
what are examples of thermal (superficial) PAM’s?
hot/cold packs, ice, paraffin
what are examples of electromagnetic (deep) PAM’s?
TENS, NMES, diathermy, ultraviolet, infrared light
what are examples of mechanical PAM’s?
traction, compression, CPM
what happens to tensile strength after wound?
will NEVER reach pre-injury status
what are the wound healing phases?
In Front of Me
I = inflammatory
F = fibroblastic/proliferative
M = maturation (scar remodeling)
when does inflammatory phase occur?
24-48 hrs complete in 7 days
what are the goals of the inflammatory phase?
defend against substances
(phagocytosis) dispose of dead + dying tissue
prepare tissue for repair
when does fibroblastic phase occur?
day 5 completed in 2-3 weeks
what occurs during fibroblastic phase?
collagen deposition
granulation
when does maturation occur?
2 weeks to 1 year
what occurs during maturation phase?
balance collagen breakdown and formation
scar becomes elastic, smoother, stronger
how does superficial heat affect the injured site?
decrease n. endings
decrease muscle spasms
increase blood flow
improve collagen
