Was ist das denn?

1. to make questions sound more casual
   * Wo hast du denn Spanisch gelernt? [So, where did you learn Spanish?)
   * Wie spät ist es denn/eigentlich? [What time is it by the way?]
2. to show amazement
   * Wie hast du das denn gemacht? [Wow, how did you do that?]
3. Negative surprise
   * Was soll das denn heißen?? [What’s that supposed to mean?]
   * Was ist denn hier passiert? [What the hell happened here?]

4. Expresses a warning.
