Mod H, U3, Les 4 Ionic, Covalent, And Metallic Bonding Flashcards
What kind of charge does an atom have if it has an equal number of protons and electrons?
Neutral
If an atom gains at least one electron, what kind of charge does it have?
Negative since it has more electrons than protons
If an atom loses at least one electron, what kind of charge does it have?
Positive since it has more protons than electrons
What is an ionic bond?
this is the force that brings oppositely charged ions together. (Electrons are transferred from a metal atom to a non mental atom)
What properties do most ionic compounds share?
Crystal lattice structure: crystal-like and very strong bond,
electrical conductivity: solids are poor conductors of electricity
Brittleness: likely to break
Solubility in water: dissolve well in water, high boiling point
What is a covalent bond?
This forms when atoms share one or more pair of electrons. (It takes too much energy to transfer) Most things around us are held together this way.
What is a molecule?
A group of atoms held together by chemical bonds. (Such as water)
Wha properties do covalent bonds share?
Low solubility in water: some dissolve in water, others do not (like wax)
Low melting and boiling points: molecules separate easily
Poor electrical conductivity: poor conductors of electricity in both solid and liquid forms. They are not charged like ions. They are neutral.
What is a metallic bond?
A bond that forms between metal atoms when their outermost energy levels overlap. They are weak compared to ionic or covalent bonds.
What properties do most metallic compounds share?
Good electrical conductors: electrons move freely
Malleable (ability to be hammered into sheets)
and ductile: (ability to be formed into long, thin wires.
