Analogy
comparison of two things ; explaining an abstract idea using concrete ideas
Deductive reasoning
general premise –> specific evidence –> Conclusion
Inductive reasoning
specific details –> evidence –> conclusion
cause and effect
- explains how one situation leads to another
- multiple causes –> the effect
- causes –> multiple effects
- domino effect, events lead from one thing to another
classification or division
- good or bad
- classifying into categories
ex. car into luxury, mid-range, etc
compare and contrast
point by point; the subject is being compared to or contrasted
definition
explains a detailed definition of a term object or concept, making it familiar to the reader
description
appeals to the 5W’s
chronological order
explains something by the order in which it happened
specific example
example used to back up/prove the sub argument or main thesis
narration
storytelling, using personal anecdotes, reflective, still follows logical order
statistics
data, infof
reference to authority
referring to someone who is credible and has the right to speak upon the subject
historical reference
includes historical, and cultural values beliefs, ideas
TOA: Pathos
appeals to the audience’s emotions
