Q

Transmission of Malaria?

A

Cause: Plasmodium Species
Transmission: Anopheles Mosquito
1. Plasmodium sex cells reproduce —-> Form zygotes in cysts
2. Cysts burst —–> Sporozoites travel to salivary gland, transferring to humans when bitten
3. Sporozites —-> Liver —->enter Red blood cells —->Multiply
4. Infected cells burst —-> Malarial fever
5. Cycle continues

Q

Koch and Anthrax?

A

Infected matter from sheep with anthrax —> Under Microscope —>Active cells
This allowed him to establish that the blood of animals with this disease always contained these micro-organisms, and that if healthy animals were inoculated they would develop the disease

Q

Koch’s Postulates (4) ?

A
  1. Microorganism must be present in every organism with the disease
  2. Microorganism must be able to be isolated from the host and cultured
  3. When this pure culture is inoculated into the healthy host, it must develop the same disease
  4. Microorganism must be able to be isolated from second host and identified as same species as original culture

Q

Causes and Effects of Disease on agricultural production, Plant Example?

A

PANAMA IN BANANAS
CAUSE: Fungus Disease called Fusarium Oxysporum
SYMPTOMS: Yellowing/Wilting of Leaves —->Plant starved of Food + Water
EFFECT: Reduced value of contaminated bananas + Reduced Income + Fungus causes permanent contamination of soils —-> no other plants can grow —-> losses of Billions of dollars.
PREVENTION: Spreads through ROOT TO ROOT contact and contaminated soil from machinery and shoes on clothing —-> TO PREVENT: Washing hands immediately if in contact with skin + Dip feet in disinfectant as a precaution to stop spread.
