Mod 7 flashcards
Prions Example?
Variant Cruetzfeld Jakobs Disease (vCJD), prion disease contracted by eating beef products from cattle infected with ‘mad cows disease’
Viruses Example?
Chicken Pox, Pink spots that become itchy, blister and burst
Bacteria Example?
Pneumonia, fever, coughing, lung congestion
Protozoan Example?
Malaria
Fungi Example?
Candidiasis Thrush, transmitted from mother to baby at birth, White patches in mouth or itchiness in vaginal area
Macroparasites Example?
Pork or Beef Tapeworm
Transmission of Malaria?
Cause: Plasmodium Species
Transmission: Anopheles Mosquito
1. Plasmodium sex cells reproduce —-> Form zygotes in cysts
2. Cysts burst —–> Sporozoites travel to salivary gland, transferring to humans when bitten
3. Sporozites —-> Liver —->enter Red blood cells —->Multiply
4. Infected cells burst —-> Malarial fever
5. Cycle continues
Koch and Anthrax?
Infected matter from sheep with anthrax —> Under Microscope —>Active cells
This allowed him to establish that the blood of animals with this disease always contained these micro-organisms, and that if healthy animals were inoculated they would develop the disease
Koch’s Postulates (4) ?
- Microorganism must be present in every organism with the disease
- Microorganism must be able to be isolated from the host and cultured
- When this pure culture is inoculated into the healthy host, it must develop the same disease
- Microorganism must be able to be isolated from second host and identified as same species as original culture
Louis Pasteur Broth Experiment?
2 flasks with Broth —-> Heated both to ensure no contamination —-> 1 had an ‘s’ shaped bend to see if microorganisms and spores would be trapped
What did Louis Pasteur determine?
Determined that microbial pathogens are free living in the environment and capable of infecting certain substrates
Direct Transmission Example?
HIV/AIDS
Indirect Transmission Example?
Measles
Vector Transmission Example?
Malaria
Causes and Effects of Disease on agricultural production, Plant Example?
PANAMA IN BANANAS
CAUSE: Fungus Disease called Fusarium Oxysporum
SYMPTOMS: Yellowing/Wilting of Leaves —->Plant starved of Food + Water
EFFECT: Reduced value of contaminated bananas + Reduced Income + Fungus causes permanent contamination of soils —-> no other plants can grow —-> losses of Billions of dollars.
PREVENTION: Spreads through ROOT TO ROOT contact and contaminated soil from machinery and shoes on clothing —-> TO PREVENT: Washing hands immediately if in contact with skin + Dip feet in disinfectant as a precaution to stop spread.
