mod 4 Flashcards
what is enthalpy of dissolution?
when an ionic compound dissolves in water, its positive and negative ions dissociate from each other and are surrounded by the oppositely charged poles of water molecules
what is bond energy?
refers to the energy required to break a specific covalent bond so that individual atoms exist in gaseous form
what does a high bond energy tell you?
is an indicator of a strong covalent bond
what is standard enthalpy formation?
the standard enthalpy formation refers to the enthalpy change that occurs when 1 mole of a compound is formed in its element
what is Hess’ Law?
Hess’ Law (of conservation of heat summation) states that the enthalpy change for an overall reaction is equal to the sum of the enthalpy changes for each step in the reaction
what is a system?
the universe can be divided into small parts for study, which is referred to as a system
what is an open system?
exchanges matter and energy with its surroundings
what is a closed system?
- matter is not exchanged
- energy is the same
what is an isolated system?
matter that isn’t exchanged
what is the 1st law of thermodynamics?
the total energy in the universe is constant; it cannot be created nor destroyed but it can be transformed or transferred to or from its surroundings
what is the formula for the 1st law of thermodynamics?
∆Euniv = ∆Esys + ∆Esurr = 0
what is the formula or energy in a system?
energy in a system = kinetic energy (KE) + potential energy (PE)
what is enthalpy?
enthalpy (H) is the energy of a system plus the product of pressure and volume
what is the enthalpy formula?
H = Esys + PV
what is entropy?
entropy is a measure of a system’s thermal energy that is not available for useful work
