Nature v nurture question
Asks how much nature (genetic factors) and how much nature (environmental factors) contributes to a persons biological, emotional, cognitive, personal, and social development.
Human development
Involves the study of a persons biological, emotional, cognitive, personal, and social development across the life span, from infancy to late adulthood.
Prodigy
A child who shows an unusual talent, ability, or genius at a very early age and doesn’t have an intellectual disability.
Epigenetics
Study of how environmental factors result in changes in gene activity that do not involve alterations to the genetic instructions but are still passed down to the next generation.
Prenatal period
Extends from from conception to birth and lasts about nine months. It consists of 3 successive phases: the germinal, embryonic, and fetal stages. During the prenatal period, a single cell will divide and grow to form 200 bil cells.
Germinal stage
First stage of prenatal development and refers to the two week period following conception.
Ovulation
The release of am ovum from the ovaries.
Conception/ fertilization
One of the millions of sperm penetrates the I bums outer membrane. After the ovum has been fertilized it’s outer membrane changes and becomes impenetrable to the remaining sperm.
Embryonic stage
Second stage if there prenatal period and spans the 2-8 weeks that follow conception; during this stage, cells divide and begin to differentiate into muscle, bone, and body organs.
Fetal stage
Begins two mo after conception and lasts til birth.
Placenta
Organ that connects the blood supply of the mother to that of the fetus. The placenta acts like a filter, allowing oxygen and nutrients to pass through while keeping out some toxic or harmful substances.
Reactive attachment disorder
Psychiatric illness characterized by serious problems in emotional attachments to others beginning before age five. Some symptoms children may show include resisting comfort and affection by parents, being superficially engaging and overly friendly with strangers, having poor peer relationships, and engaging in behavior destructive to themselves and to others.
