Mod 1 Vocabulary Flashcards
Decay
Decomposition of proteins by enzymes of aerobic bacteria
Decomposition
Separation of compounds into simpler substances by the action of microbial and/or autolytic enzymes
Disinfection
Destruction and/or inhibition of most pathogenic organisms and their products in or on the body
Cavity Embalming
The direct treatment of other than vascular injection of the contents of the body’s cavities and the lumina of the hollow viscera. Accomplished in 2 phases: Aspiration and Injection
Hypodermic Embalming
Injection of embalming chemical directly into the tissue of a dead human body by use of syringe & needle, or trocar
Surface Embalming
Also known as topical embalming; preservation of body tissue by direct contact with embalming chemicals
Enzyme
Organic catalyst produced by living cells and capable of autolytic decomposition
Protein
Organic compound found in plants and animals that can be broken down into amino acids
Restoration
Treatment of the deceased to recreate natural form and color
Temporary Preservation
Science of treating the body chemically so as to temporarily inhibit decomposition
Vascular (arterial) embalming
Use of the blood vascular system of the body to accomplish temporary preservation, sanitation, and restoration of deceased human body; accomplished through injection of an embalming chemical solution into the arteries and drainage of the blood from the veins.
