MOD 1 Flashcards
What is a computer?
A computer is an electric device that stores, retrieves, processes data, and can be programmed with instructions.
What is I/O devices
peripherals used by the computer to communicate with the external world.
CPU fullform
Central Processing Unit
What is a motherboard?
A circuit board with electronic circuit and connects microprocessor with other hardware components.
ALU full form
arithmetic and logical unit
What is the use of registers in CPU?
they are the internal storage areas of CPU
What does the Control Unit do?
Organises processing of data and instructions.
Tells when to fetch data and instructions, what to do, where to store results, sequencing of events during processing etc.
Two types of memory?
Primary memory and Secondary memory
Primary memory is also known as?
main memory, internal memory, and semiconductor memory
Two types of primary memory?
RAM and ROM
full form of RAM
random access memory
full form of ROM
Read only memory
what is RAM?
volatile, temporary storage, limited storage capacity –> due to high cost
what is RAM?
Non volatile, permanent storage, comes programmed by manufacturer
What is secondary memory?
permanent, non-volatile, backup storage, high storage, cheaper, longer time to process data
Examples of secondary data
magnetic tape drive, floppy drive, disk drive, optical disk drive
What are the two types of computers?
Based on size and based on data handling capabilities
examples of computer based on size
supercomputer, mainframe computer, minicomputer, workstation, PC
examples of computers based on data handling capabilities
analogue, digital, hybrid computers
