Mock Pt1 Prelimnary Research Flashcards
Altered vegetation conditions
The author claims Climate change and other stressors interacts with the changing conditions influencing the extent, frequency’s no severity if the fires as well as impacting future forest conditions
Fuel limitations
The author cites Daniel chmura who says For fuel limitation along with altered vegetation, climate change is likely to increase forest productivity and forest composition aka vegetation which therefore could increase fuel levels or things that can burn easily in the forest
Agricultural and urban influences
Human influence in forests has led to domestic livestock grazing and other agricultural shifts along with urbanization. Therefore there is a (direct or indirect) exclusion of fires in dry woods so it is suitable for humans to inhabit these places where land was converted.
Which May seem positive at first except that it is also fire supression
Selective logging
Selective logging which is the practice of removing a couple trees and leaving the rest intact, has eliminated many of the larger resistant trees decreasing the forests natural protection against wildfires
Fire control and suppression
Finally according to Hessburg, a researcher at the USDA forest service, fire control and suppresion surprisingly increases the likelihood of frequent and severe fires. The suppression of fires actually results in increased forest density and fuel buildup leading to more frequent and severe fires
Conclusion
Historically landscape designs and fuel limitations were used to prevent and limit fire size and severity however nowadays our modern landscapes totally ignore these constraints, raising the risk of huge high severity fires, especially in our warming environment
What is this article’s relevance
Due to climate change, wildfires specifically in the Pacific Northwest increased in frequency and size. The Dixie fire, one of the largest fires here currently has captured the attention of fire scientists resource managers and the general media
But what is the main phenomenon of wildfires the author is investigating?
Altered vegetation conditions pre requisite
