What is a parcan
A large lantern that gives a wash of colour over stage space
What is a strobe
A flickering light that can create the effect of stilted movement when used in darkness
What are gels
Sheets of coloured plastic cut outs that are placed in front of lanterns to alter colour
What is a Gobo
Metal or plastic cut outs which are placed in front of lanterns/parcan to create shaped effects eg- shadows
What is a cross fade
Fading down of one lighting state whilst the other is fading up
What does SFX stand for
Sound effects
What does LFX stand for
Lighting effects
What does catharsis mean
A moment of high tragedy at the emotional climax of a play
What is cyclorama
A white sheet covering back of stage with an image projected on it to create the illusion of a stage setting eg- the sky
Describe a proscenium / end on stage
Audience sits in front of stage, facing it directly the stage is normally at a lower height. Apron of stage extends out closer to seating area.
Sight lines are excellent but audience can feel removed from the action.
Describe an arena stage
A rectangular shaped stage in the centre with audience surrounding it, audience feel included- intimate but sight lines can be an issue so there needs to be lots of movement around the space.
Describe a thrust stage
A stage that juts out into the audience on L, R and F sides but still has a back of stage.
Intimate atmosphere but sight lines can be an issue
Describe an in the round stage
Positioned in the centre of an audience, the audience is around the whole stage.
Intimate stage space good for drama with audience involvement- creates atmosphere but sight lines can be tricky from all angles
Describe a traverse stage
Stage where the audience sits on 2 sides, similar to a cat walk. Creates an intimate stage space - builds intimate atmosphere.
Audience can see work that happens at 2 sides but can see 2 entirely different shows from either side- can cause bad sight lines.
