Q

why are older women more at risk for fractures?

A
  • Elderly are more prone to falls in general due to muscle loss, balance, vision issues.
    • Calcium stores decrease with age. Estrogen decreases with age and more sharply in women than men (especially during menopause). Estrogen is bone protective, so older women are more at risk for fractures as they become older (estrogen decrease).
    • Decrease in estrogen = decrease in calcium storage
