Mobility Flashcards
what is the concept of mobility?
a state or quality of being mobile or movable.
what makes up our musculoskeletal system?
bones and joints of skeletal system + muscles, ligaments, tendons, cartilage, brain functioning
how does the MSK system work with circulatory & nervous systems?
similar to digestion, the process of mobility begins in the neurological system. in order for the muscles to tell the bones to move, the nervous system becomes involved.
provide examples of complications of immobility.
skin breakdown, pressure ulcers, contractures, muscular weakness, muscular atrophy, etc.
why are older women more at risk for fractures?
- Elderly are more prone to falls in general due to muscle loss, balance, vision issues.
- Calcium stores decrease with age. Estrogen decreases with age and more sharply in women than men (especially during menopause). Estrogen is bone protective, so older women are more at risk for fractures as they become older (estrogen decrease).
- Decrease in estrogen = decrease in calcium storage
