A
- Progressive neurodegenerative disorder causing weakness in the muscle

A
- Weakness in ankle/leg
- Slurred speech
- Dysphagia
- Weak grip
- Muscle cramps and twitches
- Weight loss
- Emotional lability

- Sporadic or inherited?

- Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS)
- Primary lateral sclerosis (PLS)
- Progressive muscular atrophy (PMA)
- Progressive bulbar palsy (PBP)

A
Mainly affects 50-70

How is MND diagnosed?
A
- Clinical findings (eg. LMN, UMD, patterns of weakness)
- Family history
- Tests

What tests are used to diagnose MND? (5)
A
- Blood tests
- MRI
- EMG and nerve conduction study (NCS)
- Lumbar puncture to obtain CSF
- Tissue biopsy if EMG/NCS are inconclusive (rare)

How is MND treated?
A
- No cure, treatment is symptomatic
- Specialist care
- Medication

- Physiotherapy

What medicines can be used to treat MND?
A
- Riluzole: slow down progression of condition
