MND Flashcards
What is MND
Motor Neurone Disease (MND) is a progressive neurological condition. It describes a group of diseases that affects the nerves (motor neurones) in the brain and the spinal cord that tells your muscles what to do. With MND messages from the motor neurons gradually stop reaching the muscles. This leads to the muscles to weaken, stiffen and waste. MND is life-shortening and there is no cure. There are many different types of MND
What are some of the symptoms of MND
muscle weakness, with loss of muscle mass (wasting), and movement and mobility problems
muscle cramps and spasms, including rippling sensations (known as fasciculation)
stiff joints, which may limit range of movement
pain or discomfort, as a result of other symptoms (not usually caused by MND directly)
speech and communication problems, affecting how you speak, gesture and show expression
swallowing difficulties, affecting how you eat and drink
saliva problems, where thin saliva pools in the mouth or saliva becomes thick and sticky
weakened coughing, which makes it harder to clear the throat
breathing problems, which can lead to breathlessness and fatigue
emotional lability, with inappropriate emotional responses, such as laughing when feeling sad
changes to thinking and behaviour, for about half of those diagnosed with MND.
MND and capacity
Decision-making: SLTs can contribute to supported decision making and the determination of mental capacity where changes to
cognition and behaviour impact on thinking or give the impression
of impacting on thinking. This promotes better planning and
decision-making and reduces the risk of people being perceived
as lacking capacity due to theirr communication needs not being
appropriately supported
