MN Communities/Deciduous Woods/Prairies Flashcards
What are the three main biomes of MN?
Prairie
Coniferous
Deciduous
Prairie Biome (5)
P/E ratio less than 1 Dry Adapted to heat Plants adapted to prevent things from eating them No trees
Deciduous Biome (3)
P/E Ratio is about 1
Layers
Deciduous trees
Layers of deciduous biome
Deciduous trees
Smaller/shorter trees
Wildflowers
Coniferous Biome (5)
P/E Ratio greater than 1 Wet Conifer trees Dark/little sun Lack of wildflowers
How does microclimate (temp, moisture, p/e ratio) differ from a north to south facing slope?
The north side of a slope is going to be colder and have less sun than the south side
Why are there so many wildflowers in deciduous woods in the spring?
Because the leaves haven’t bloomed fully yet and the sun can reach the ground to provide sunlight to the wildflowers
How are the prairies adapted to fire?
From being burned every number of years
Why don’t trees grow in prairies?
The prairies are burned every certain number of years which kills the tree roots because they haven’t adapted to intense heat. Which prevents any trees from growing.
Explain how geology and climate interact to create MN biomes
The temperature is what determines how much water is evaporated, which then leads to determining the P/E ratio, allowing certain plants and wildflowers to grow in certain areas.
What biome is the most disturbed by humans in MN and why?
The prairie
