MMT practical 1 Flashcards
Upper trapezius
Primary motion-
Position and action-
Resistance-
Primary motion- Elevate scapula
Position and action- Sitting relaxed, Elevate the shoulders towards the ears
Resistance only- Apply resistance to both shoulders simultaneously
Middle trapezius Primary motion- Position and action- Resistance- Stabilization
Adduct the scapula
AG: subject is prone with elbow flexed over the edge of the treatment table at 90 degrees, make sure thumbs are up
Resistance- Applied to the medial border of the scapula, pushing down and out into abduction
Stabilization- Stabilize the contralateral thorax
Lower trapezius Primary motion- Position and action- Resistance- Stabilization
Adduction and depression of the scapula and upward rotation
Subject lies prone with shoulder abducted 130 degrees (diagonal above head)
Subject lifts upper limb off the table, thumb up (superman)
Resistance- Applied to the medial` angle of the scapula in a up and outward direction
Stabilize the thorax on the opposite side
Rhomboids Primary motion- Position and action- Resistance- Stabilization
Scapular adduction and downward rotation
AG: subject lies prone with hand resting on opposite hip (lumbar spine)
Lift hand off of the back
Applied to the medial border of the scapula, pushing into abduction and upward rotation
(pushing up and out)
Stabilize the thorax on the opposite side
Serratus Anterior Primary motion- Position and action- Resistance- Stabilization
Scap abduction, upward rotation, stabilize scap
Supine with elbow flexed and GH flexed
Point elbow to ceiling, lift shoulder off table
Resist at elbow
Opposite side of thorax
Pectoralis Minor Primary motion- Position and action- Resistance- Stabilization
Downward rotation of scap and abduction of scap (assist)
Supine with arms crossed
Bring shoulders together to abduct scap (mummy)
Resist at coracoid process
Ipsilateral thorax
Anterior Deltoid Primary motion- Position and action- Resistance- Stabilization
Flexion of the GH joint
Sitting, Flex GH and elbow, internally rotated (fist across chest)
Try to raise their arm (in front)- bring elbow up towards ceiling
Resist on humerus near elbow
At opposite chest
Coracobrachialis Primary motion- Position and action- Resistance- Stabilization
GH flexion and adduction
Sitting elbow and GH flexed to 90 with palm facing inwards
Flexion GH joint
Resist down and out at humerus
Opposite shoulder
Latissimus Dorsi
GH extension, adduction, and internal rotation
Prone, knees bent, hands by side, palms towards ceiling
Ask to raise palm up to ceiling
Resist at external humerus
Stabilize at thorax
Teres Major
Extension, medial rotation and Adduction
Position- Prone, hand on back of hip; pt trying to resist extension and adduction
Ask pt to reach for their opposite hip
Resist on humerus (down and out)
Supraspinatus
Abduction and upward rotation of scapula
Sitting; abduction starting at 30 degrees
Thumb is up
Ask pt to raise arm up to sky (abduction)
Resist just proximal to elbow
Stabilize on opposite shoulder
Middle Deltoid
Abduction
Sitting; abduction starting at 90 degrees
Ask pt to raise arm up to sky (abduction)
Resist on distal humerus
Stabilize on opposite shoulder
Posterior Deltoid
horizontal abduction, Extension, external rotation
Prone, hang shoulder off table and flex elbow 90 degrees
Ask pt to raise elbow up to sky
Resist on humerus near elbow
Stabilize scapula
Pectoralis Major
Horizontal adduction
Supine; resist horizontal adduction and then resist adduction to hip
Clavicular fibers - hand to opposite shoulder
Sternal fibers - hand to opposite hip
Resist on humerus
The opposite shoulder
Subscapularis
Internal rotation
Prone, elbow on table with forearm hanging off; palm out with thumb pointing backwards
Patient tries to rotate shoulder to push back and raise palm up to ceiling;
resist on forearm
Support humerus and thorax with hand and forearm
