MMT head and trunk Flashcards
Innervation of capital extension
suboccipital nerve C1 - T1
greater occipital nerve C1 - T1
fair and above position capital extension
prone with head over edge of table
resistance for capital extension
patient extends head by tilting chin (looks at wall)
resistance is applied over occiput towards floor
below fair position for capital extension
supine head weight supported to reduce friction
palpation for capital extension
difficult to palpate
innervation of cervical extension
C1 - C8
fair and above position for cervical extension
prone with head over edge of table
resistance for cervical extension
patient extends head without tilting chin (looks at floor)
resistance is applied over parieto-occipital area towards floor
below fair position for cervical extension
supine - pushes into surface
palpation for cervical extension
distal to occiput at level of cervical vertebrae
position for combined extension
prone with head over edge of table
resistance for combined extension
patient extends head (look at ceiling)
below fair position for combined extension
partial range
palpation for combned extension
base of occiput and cervical region
innervation for capital flexion
C1 - C3
fair and above position for capital flexion
supine head supported by table
resistance for capital flexion
patient tucks chin
resistance under chin by cupping mandible in, up and backward direction
palpation for capital flexion
difficult due to carotid arteries
innervation of cervical flexion
C2 - C8
Cranial nerve XI
fair and above cervical flexion
supine head supported by table
resistance for cervical flexion
patient lifts head off table, keeping eyes on ceiling
resistance over forehead with two fingers towards table
below fair position for cervical flexion
supine, roll head to side SCM
palpation for cervical flexion
palpate SCM
substitutions for cervical flexion
platysma - see facial grimacing and skin wrinkling on anterior surface of neck
position of combined flexion
supine head supported by table
resistance for combined flexion
patient lifts head and neck, chin to chest
resistance over forehead
below fair position for combined flexion
supine, rolle head to side (SCM)
palpation for combined flexion
SCM
Combined flexion with rotation, isolate SCM position
supine head supported by table, rotated to right or left side
resistance for combined flexion with rotation, isolate SCM position
patient lifts head keeping head turned
resistance over temporal area over ear
below fair position for combined flexion with rotation, isolate SCM
supine roll head to side (SCM)
cervical rotation testing position
supine, cervical spine in neutral, head rotated to one side to start
cervical rotation resistance
patient turns head toward ceiling
resistance applied at side of head above ear
position of thoracic extension
prone with head and upper trunk over edge of table (nipple line)
therapist stabilizes LE fair grade with hands at side
resistance for thoracic extension
patient extends to horizontal position
fair grade = clears umbilicus (combined with lumbar extension)
position for lumbar extension
prone with hands clasped behind the head
therapist stabilizes at ankles or pelvis if hips are weak
fair grade is with hands at sides
resistance for lumbar extension
patient extends spine to clear umbilicus
palpation for lumbar extension
adjacent to spinous processes
pelvic elevation innervation
T12 - L3
position for pelvic elevation
supine or prone
resistance for pelvic elevation
patient hikes pelvis
resistance is applied around ankle in caudal direction
palpation for pelvic elevation
not palpable unless atrophy in area
substitutions for pelvic elevation
abdominal
spinal extensors
innervation for trunk flexion
T7 - T12
position for trunk flexion
supine
stabilize at legs if hips are weak
resistance for trunk flexion
curl up until scapula clear table
N=hands behind head
G=hands crossed over chest
F = arms along trunk
below fair position for trunk flexion
supine knees flexed
P = rib cage depresses T = cough
palpation for trunk flexion
midline of thorax over linea alba - use 4 fingers of both hands
subsitutions for trunk flexion
umbilicus will deviate toward strongest part
innervation for trunk rotation
T7 - L1
position for trunk rotation
supine
resistance for trunk rotation
flexes and rotates to one side
arm position same as for trunk flexion
below fair position for trunk rotation
supine - knees flexed supported head
substitutions for trunk rotation
pec major - see shoulder shrug and raising with limited trunk rotation
