one’s own understanding of right and wrong

religious freedom
often called “the first freedom” because it is the opening of the 10 amendments of the Bill of Rights, and the framers placed to right to religious freedom before others
part of the UN declaration of Human Rights- principle that supports the freedom of an individual or community, in public or private, to manifest (see below) their religion in teaching, practice, worship and observance
manifest
to display or make known (to manifest one’s religion: to publicly or openly practice worship of one’s religion)
religious pluralism
the acceptance of all religions as having equal rights to co-exist. (multi-faith society)
pluralis: more than one- latin root
mono-faith society
where only one religion is practiced by the people
census
a whole population of a country questioned/ counted
survey
a selected group of people asked questions (who are questioned)
legislation
new law passed after being voted on (passed/ vetoed)

Congress shall make no law prohibiting the free exercise of religion (1789)
Sherbert vs. Verner
Adele Sherbert was allowed to refuse to work on Saturdays due to her religious beliefs (Judaism) and receive unemployment benefits (1963)
documentary
a factual, informative film/ TV show/ program (such as Living With the Amish)
media
any form of communication which reaches most of society; ex: radio, television newspapers, film, the internet etc
tabloid
a newspaper that focuses more on entertainment aspects of politics and local issues, as well as more pictures, more advertising, a more biased and lower quality writing (view) and aimed mainly at the working class (is less expensive than broadsheets)
broadsheet
a newspaper that focuses on current events and politics etc more seriously (than tabloids) and tend to be more factual/ objective in their written pieces than tabloids. They also are aimed mainly at the middle-upper classes, and those who are academics, or those with high- educational backgrounds. Compared to tabloids, the broadsheets also include less advertisements, and are more expensive.
schism
a religious split, usually in religious groups that differ in beliefs or opinions of certain issues, whether modern or directly relating to interpretations of the bible
anabaptist
one who baptizes again as an adult, under the belief that this baptism confirms their faith and belief as grown adults
descendent
family member(s) within an ancestral tree/history, their family lineage traces them as successors (those who are followed in a family tree/lineage) (genealogy)
affiliation
association with or in accordance/ agreement with someone/thing
