ACCOMPLISHMENTS:
*Crucial to preparing SHS for a UC Office of the President (UCOP) Risk Management review by an outside consulting firm, as part of a UC campus-wide process . Utilized previous experience with the Joint Commission and other accrediting organizations while at University of California Davis School of Medicine. Formed teams focused on clinic response. Prior to the review, created a movie to explain “buddy cards” and help reduce staff stress. Exceeded reviewers’ expectations, who pointed out several staff best practices.

  • Researched and effectively invigorated SHS’ paper-based policies and procedures within three months of on-boarding. Policies and procedures were backed up on an outdated server that was difficult to use in real time. The workaround for staff was to print paper copies every time new policy and procedure documents were emailed. Moved from an archaic structure to online Document Management System (DMS). This involved analysis of the old system, and researching available applications appropriate for the SHS environment considering cost, scalability, and end-user experience. Developed proposal for formal presentation to stakeholders, e.g., Management Team, Student Information Systems and Technology (SIS/T), and governing body (Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs and Dean of Students). Gained the respect of the SIS&T Department. Because of this success at Student Health, other departments within the Student Affairs Division are slated for rollout.
  • Renowned and respected by direct reports and system-wide colleagues from other campuses.

SPECIALIZED MEDICAL PRACTICE: “During the early 1980s, AIDS reared its ugly face in our community [Sacramento area], just as it was appearing in so many other cities across the country. Clearly, this disease needed to be addressed with a concerted effort. In 1989, our community did just that by joining forces to address the epidemic in a resounding way. With the help of UC Davis Health Systems, CHW Mercy, Sutter Health, and the county of Sacramento, we formed the Center for AIDS Research, Education and Services (CARES) to serve people with HIV/AIDS. A few years later, Kaiser Permanente joined the effort”. There was a need for a gynecologist to help expand the service to women with HIV/AIDS and I filled this role.

INNOVATIVE AND SUCCESSFUL PATIENT CARE AND TREATMENT: Started CARES’ Colposcopy Clinic and during 17 years had no patients that progressed to cervical cancer. Many of these patients were underserved and even homeless. Some of the women did have severe dysplasia, but I was able to persuade them to have their cone biopsies or LEEPs at the University of California, Davis (UCD). I arranged care at UCD, and followed up from my UCD office.

  • Acted as liaison between CARES and UCD Perinatal Division to care for high-risk HIV-positive pregnant patients.
  • Credentialed as an HIV Specialist (AAHIVS) by the American Academy of HIV Medicine; always available for consultation.
