Mixtures Flashcards
How do you separate cooked past in a pot of water?
Place pasta in a strainer. The water will go through the tiny holes.
How do you separate laundry before washing?
Using hands, separate the darks and lights in separate piles.
How do you separate oil mixed with water?
Oil will always be on the top of a oil & water mixture. Using a spoon, take off the oil and water will be left.
What is a solute?
The substance that is dissolved by the solvent.
What is the solvent?
The liquid in a solution that dissolves the substance in the solution.
What is the universal solvent.
Water is the universal solvent because water can dissolve almost every solute.
What is dissolve?
When a solute mixes in with the solvent.
What is distillation?
Distillation is a method used in the separation of various mixtures. Its simply the heating of a substance or a combination of substances.
What is mass?
Mass is the amount of matter a substance contains. It is measured in kilograms (kg) or grams (g).
What is volume?
The amount of space an object takes up.
What is a parallax?
Is a deceptive change of the position of an object which is observed while the position of the observer changes.
What is a meniscus?
The lowest part of the surface of a liquid. The natural dip in a liquid.
What does concentrated mean?
A concentrated solution is a solution that contains a large amount of dissolved solute and very little solvent.
What does diluted mean?
A solution that has very little dissolved solute.
What does concentration Mean?
When a solvent has a lot of solute in it.
What is soluble?
When a solvent is able to dissolve more solute.
What is insoluble?
When a solvent has so much solute that in can not dissolve anymore solute.
What is unsaturated?
Not Able to dissolve more substance.
What is saturated?
Able to dissolve more substance.
What is the common measurement for volume of a liquid?
Millimetres mL
What are 2 devices that can be used to measure volume?
beaker
flask
Why must you read the volume of a liquid from the bottom of the meniscus?
The lowest point of the surface of the liquid is the most accurate.
What is the mass of an object?
It is the number of particles in the object.
What is mass usually measured in?
kilograms, kg
grams, g
milograms, mg
What is weight?
Weight is a measurement depending on the force of gravity forced on the object.
What is the difference between mass and weight?
The mass of an object or person doesn’t change based on his/her environment. A person’s or object’s weight changes depending on the amount of gravity acting on that person or object.
What device is used to measure mass?
A scale.
What is the scale used in the science lab called?
a triple beam balance
Which objects could be measured using a triple beam balance?
pencil
iphone
paper
small container
Which objects could not be measured using a triple beam balance?
big vase
person
large objects that have a large volume
In what order of units should you measure when using the triple beam balance?
Measure in order from largest units to smallest units, then add them all up.
How can you measure the mass of a solid?
Put the solid on the scale to find mass.
How would you measure the mass of a liquid?
- Get mass of container with water.
- Get mass of empty container.
- Subtract mass of empty container from the full conatiner.
How would you measure the volume of a liquid?
- Use beaker to find the exact ma of the substance.
