Mixtures Flashcards
What is a mixture?
A mixture is made up of two or more substances or materials that have different physical properties.
Ways of separating mixtures
Handsorting (using your hand)
Sieving (solids don’t go through the sieve, only the liquid)
Filtration ( separating mixtures with particles of different sizes)
Magnetism (using a magnet)
Evaporation (Boiling water, then it turns into water vapor, the solids are left behind)
Chromatography ( separating a solution of different colours)
Distillation (a method of separating two liquids with different boiling points, used to purify liquids also or recover solvent from solution)
Examples of separating mixtures
Handsorting - separating raisins and nuts
Sieving - separating cooked pasta and water
Filtration - separating coffee grounds and water.
Magnetism - separating iron fillings and sand
Evaporation - separating salt and water.
Chromatography - separating black ink into different colours.
Distillation - wanting to get pure water from sea water.
