Mixing Materials Flashcards
When would you use Temp bond (zinc oxide eugenol)?
As a temporary cement
If RCT may be required in the future
Remember!!! Kalzinol is a zinc oxide eugenol temporary filling material for RCT not a cement
When would you use Aquacem (GIC)?
Crowns
Onlays and Inlays
Stainless steel crowns
NOT a temporary cement
When would you use Poly F (zinc polycarboxylate)?
Luting cement if the crown already has sufficient retention
Needs to be mixed to double cream consistency
If prep is too tapered do not use as it isn’t that strong
When would you use zinc phosphate?
Post crowns
Some people may avoid using in vital teeth because of the risk of damage to the pulp from the exothermic reaction (mixed on a glass slab)
When would you use Panavia (resin based cement)?
Bonded amalgam
Veneer - good shade beneath translucent veneers
Crowns and onlays that lacks retention
Resin retained bridges
What are the pros and cons of using Aquacem?
✅Fluoride releasing, easy to measure and mix, reasonable aesthetics, not too moisture sensitive and quite strong
❌If not mixed rapidly becomes viscous, may cause hypersensitivity
What are the pros and cons of Temp bond?
✅Temporary, equal strength to poly F, equal quantities of paste
❌Weakest, slowly resorbable, leaching
What are the pros and cons of Poly F?
✅Easy mixing, not too moisture sensitive
❌Low compressive and tensile strength
What are the pros and cons of Zinc Phosphate?
✅Strong, cheap, not too moisture sensitive
❌Exothermic reaction requires glass slab mixing, water based susceptible to erosion
What are the pros and cons of Panavia?
✅Greatest compressive and tensile strength, least microleakage, aesthetic, bonds well to enamel, reduced post cementation sensitivity
❌moisture sensitive, technique sensitive, expensive, must be kept in fridge, some shrinkage
