What is a mixed number?
A whole number and a proper fraction
What is an improper fraction?
A fraction whose numerator is greater than the denominator
What does a mixed number represent?
Addition
How do you convert an improper fraction into a mixed number?
- Divide the numerator by the denominator
- Write the whole number part of the answer as the whole number in the mixed number
- Write the remainder as a numerator of the fraction part
- Keep the denominator the same
How do you convert a mixed number into an improper fraction?
- Multiply the whole number by the denominator
- Add the numerator
- Keep the denominator the same
How is a negative mixed number expressed?
- W - x/y
When converting a negative mixed number into an improper fraction how is negative improper fraction expressed?

How do you add or subtract mixed numbers?
- Add or subtract the whole numbers
- Find same common denominator for the fractions
- Add them
- Simplify to mixed number if improper fraction
What happens if you get a positive whole number and a negative fraction in a mixed number?
Change to addition
How do you change a positive whole number and negative fraction mixed number into addition?
- Express the whole number as addition by pulling out a 1
- Change the 1 to be expressed as a fraction equivalent to 1 that has the same common denominator as the fraction,
- Subtract the original fraction with the new one
What is the best way to avoid errors?
Always write out everything even things I think I know the answer too and recheck
How do you multiply or divide mixed numbers?
- Convert to improper fractions
- Then operate
When dividing fractions what is important to remember?
To flip the 2nd fraction and multiply them
What needs to be done right before converting a fraction to a mixed number?
Ensure it is 100% simplified
How do you know which fraction is larger?
- If they have the same denominator the one with the largest numerator is larger
- If they have the same numerator the one with the smallest denominator is larger
- If they don’t have a common numerator or denominator - find a common denominator
How would you approach answering a question like “what is 1/3 of the way between x and y”?
- Find the difference between the numbers
- Divide the difference by the denominator of the fraction (i.e. 3 if 1/3)
- Add the answer in part 2 to the smaller number
