Mix Design Flashcards
1
Q
How is compressive strength of concrete modelled?
A
Via a normal distribution
2
Q
What is characteristic strength?
A
The least value of the concrete strength at which the structure can be expected not to fail
3
Q
Why ought you to aim for minimal cement in concrete?
A
It is expensive and generates heat and shrinkage in hydration
4
Q
What are the 6 stages of mix design?
A
- Determining target mean strength and w/c ratio
- Finding the amount of free water required
- Calculating cement concrete
- Determining the total wet aggregate weight
- Figuring out the proportion of coarse to fine aggregates
- Performing trial mixes and adjusting mix accordingly
5
Q
In notation C40/50, what do the numbers refer to?
A
40 is the cylindrical compressive strength
50 is the cubic compressive strength - this is typically the number taken as characteristic strength
6
Q
If the concrete strength is off, what can be adjusted?
A
Cement content (Water content must not be changed)
