Mix And Flow Of Matter Flashcards
What does buoyancy mean
Tendency of an object to float when placed in a fluid
Define compressibility
Extent to which a substance (solid liquid or gas) can be compressed
What does incompressible mean
Not capable of being compressed
Define pressure
Measure of the amount of force applied to a given area
Define pascals law
When pressure is applied to a liquid in a container the pressure and force is transmitted equally and undiminished throughout the liquid; an enclosed liquid transmits pressure equally in all directions
Define hydraulic system
System that uses the liquid under pressure to move loads
Define pneumatic system
System that uses a gas under pressure to move loads
What happens to the viscosity of a fluid when there is an increase or decrease in the temperature?
As the temperature of the liquid decreases its viscosity increases and as The temperature increases the viscosity decreases
What are the steps to calculate density
Ex: what is the density of the following substance
2.0 mL of mercury has a mass of 27.1 g
D=?
M=27.1 g
Volume=2.0 ml
D= M/V
D= 27.1g/2.0 ml
13.55
The density of mercury is 13.55
What happens to the density of a fluid when there is an increase or decrease in the temperature?
And low temperatures it will be a solid and at higher temperatures it will be a liquid and at even higher temperatures it will be a gas
How does density change when the concentration of a substance is increase or decreased?
Increasing the concentration of a substance in the solution increases the density
Give an example where we was buoyancy
On A boat The boat pushes the water down there for the water will want to come back up and pushes the boat back up
How are the compressibilities of liquids and gases different
since the particles in a liquid are more closer together it is harder to compress it and since air particles are further apart it is more compressible
Explain pressure in your own words
Pressure is the amount of force applied to a given area
What is an every day material that has a fluid under pressure
A hose uses water under pressure
Jack hammer uses air under pressure
What does SCUBA
stand for?
Self contained underwater breathing apparatus
What causes the “bends” and how is it treated
Bends are when The sudden change in pressure causes nitrogen gas to bubble out of the blood and tissues these bubbles can collect in other body parts and cause considerable pain. The treatment for the Bends is to place that affected Diver in a special chamber this chamber increases the pressure surrounding the divers body
What are pumps used for? provide an example.
Pumps are devices that move a fluid Through or into something they are used too put air into something so that it will stay. Ex: when you want to filter your water in your aquarium you pump air into it to clean it
How does a detergent work to make clothes clean?
When dirty and grease are on the fabric and you put it in the washing machine the mixture of water detergent and clothes is Agitated in the washing machine then dirt breaks off from the clothes and surfactants in the detergents surround the dirt particles so they can’t reattached to the clothes
Define surfactant
Particles that attach themselves to dirt and oil particles, separating them from fabric or other materials
What are valves used for? provide an example.
They are used to control or regulate the amount of flow..
Ex: the valves in your bathroom taps
What is a Bathyscaph? How is it different from submarine?
A Bathyscaph is a different kind of submersible it is designed to go to the very deep parts of the ocean.
It is different because then some marine because a bathyscaphe can go very deep unlike a submarine that has a limitation
How is a fish similar to a submarine and how would dives and surfaces?
Because one of fish wants to dive it uses its swim bladder and dissolved gases in the fishes blood moving to the sack to give it buoyancy and when it wants to dive deeper the swimbladder Empties.
Describe how a submarine uses water and compressed air to be able to sink and surface in the ocean
When a submarine is on the surface it’s ballast tanks are full of air which makes it rise when it want to dive the submarine releases air from the ballast tanks to the valves on the top of the tanks and bring some water through the bottom valves and when it wants to resurface compressed air is forced into the ballast tanks do the valves at the top and this forces the sea water out of the bottom valves.
What does buoyant force mean
Upward force that a fluid exerts on an object
