Q

What is a heterogenious mixture?

What are some examples?

A

It is a mechanical mixture in which you can see the seperate pieces or particles this also means that you will not get the exact same thing in every bite or scoop.
(examples: Soil, fruit salad, blood, concrete)

9
Q

What is a the difference between a saturated and non-saturated mixture?

A

Once a mixture is saturated and no more solute can be added in a non-saturated mixture you could change the temperature and more could be added and dissolved but if a mixture is a satured mixture then even if the temperature is changed no more solute could be added.

A

There is more solute that solvent and it is stronger or more flavourful and in some cases has a thicker consistancy. Not very much more solute can be added. nw

Q

What is boyancy?

A

They upward force on an object reducing the force of gravity. The object or fluid that is boyant has to be less dense than what it is sitting in/on.

18
Q

What is a solute and what is a solvent?

A

The solute is whst you add to the solvent and it is what is being dissolved.(ex. Juice powder)
The solvent in what the solute is being added to or what is dissolving it.(ex. Water)

Q

A diluted solution is one in which…

A

Has more solvent that solute so it would be weaker or not as flavourful. Lots of more solute can be added and it is liquidy or thin.

20
Q

What is concentraition?

A

The measure of how much of a given substance is mixed with another substance.(Ex.75g of sugare per 100mL of water)

21
Q

What is a colloid mixture?

A

A mixture in which the particles never settle down to the bottom.(Ex. milk) (Not orange juice because the pulp sinks and settles)

22
Q

A homogonous mixture is one in which…

A

It is a solution in which particles of different substances are intermingled an all of the particles in the mixture completely disapear or dissolve. It apears to be one substance and you can not see the seperate pieces.
(Ex.Vinegar, water, air)

23
Q

What is the difference bettween a mixture and a solution?

A

A mixture is made of two or more substances
(Ex. Salad)

A solution is a type of mixture that is seperated evenly and you get the same thing in every bite/scoop
(Ex.Milk, water, juice)

24
Q

What is a pneumatic system?(gas)

A

Systems that use gas or air under pressure to move loads.(Ex. Jackhammer, Air brakes and dentist drill)

25
Q

What is a Hydrolic system?(liquid)

A

System that used liquid specificly water under pressure to move loads.(Ex.Hydrolic lift, pressure washer,

26
Q

What is solubility?

A

They ability a substance has to dissolve. How much solute can be dissolved into a specific amounth of solvent.

27
Q

What is a saturation point?

A

The point where no more solute can be dissolved into the the solvent at the given temperature.

28
Q

What is an Aqueous solution?

A

A solution where water is the solvent.

29
Q

What is thermal pollution?

A

When people take cool water out of a lake or pond and put it back in warm water.

30
Q

What is neutral bouyancy?

A

When the object or substance neither sinks no flaots it is suspended right in the middle.

31
Q

What is the plimsoll line?

A

A line painted on the side of a ship or boat to show how heavy a load can be placed in it in different water conditions. (Where the water level is on the boat or ship when it is in the water, this line may varry based on the density of the water it is in. Lake water is less dence than salt water so the boat would sind down further.)

32
Q

What is compressability?

A

When a force pushes or acted on a object.

33
Q

What does it mean if something is incompressable?

A

The substance does not have the ability to be compressed.(can not be compressed)

34
Q

What is matter?

A

Anything that has mass and takes up space.

35
Q

What is a pure substance?

A

Substances that are made up of one type of matter, they can’t be seperated into different substances. A pure substance is either a compound or an element.

36
Q

What are suspensions?

A

Mixtures in which dropelets of one substance are held in another substance. Undisturbed its parts will usually seperate.(Ex.water dropelets in oil.)

37
Q

What is pressure?

A

The measure of the amount of force applied to a certain area.

38
Q

All matter can be seperated into two groups, these are…

A

Mixtures and pure substances.

39
Q

What is Pascal’s law?

A

Input pressure=Output pressure
(If you push an amount of water through a tube the same amount will come out the other end.)(If you change the pressure on one end it will change the other end as well)

40
Q

Explain how agitation or a disturbance can affect the solubility/rate of dissolving?

A

The particles bump into eachother and combine faster.

41
Q

Can something dissolve without stirring or a disturbance?

A

It depends on what the solute and solvent are, most won’t or at least not very well however some conditions and factors in them can affect the outcomes.

42
Q

Can you combine two liquids and have a volume less than the sum of the volumes when you started?

A

yes, it depends on what the liquids you are combining and it won’t affect it much but some of the particles can escape when combining.

43
Q

The particle model of matter discribes the structre of matter by using 4 main points, they are…

A
  • All matter is made up of tiny particles
  • Tiny particles in matter are always moving and vibrating
  • The particles in matter may bond together
  • Particles constantly have space between them
44
Q

What effect does temperature have on the viscocity of a fluid?

A

Warmer fluids will must often flow must faster and have a lower viscocity than a fluid that it cooler.
High viscocity=slow flowing
Low viscocity=fast moving

45
Q

What is one pascal equal to?

A

One pascal is equal to one neuton.

46
Q

How does depth in the ocean affect pressure?

A

The deeper you are the greater the hight the force of pressure is from the weight of the water above.

47
Q

What are surfactants?

A

Particles that attach themselves to to dirt and oil particles. They are most often used in detergents and cleaning products like soap.

48
Q

What is “The Bends” and how is it treated?

A

A diseased caused by pressure decreasing rapidly. It happens to divers when they assend to quickly.(too much nitrogen enters the blood steam.)(Body becomes saturated with nitrogen) It is treated by placing the diver in a chamber and increasing the pressure around them so that the nitrogen can be released.

49
Q

What is the function of a pump?

A

It moves fluid from one place to another. (Ex. pump water out of a well of a pump used to blow up a basket ball)
