MItosis,WFP,Protists Flashcards
Protista
The animal kingdom for protists
Flagellum
long, whip-like structure that helps some single celled organisms move
Cilia
Hairs on the sides of some organisms bodies that let them move
Daughter Colony
a secondary colony growing on the surface of an older colony
Pseudopod
a temporary growth on a cell that allows it to be mobile, almost like a little foot.
Seed
The tiny beginnings of a plant.
Cotyledon
Seed leaves
Monocot
the seeds of which contain only one embryo leaf, or cotyledon.
Dicot
a flowering plant with an embryo that bears two cotyledons (seed leaves).
Germination
the development of a plant from a seed or spore after a period of dormancy.
Macronutrients
the nutrients you use in the largest amounts.
Ex: Nitrogen, Potassium
Micronutrients
a chemical element or substance that is essential in minute amounts to the growth and health of a living organism
Ex: Iron, Zinc
Chromatin
The primary function of chromatin is to compress the DNA into a compact unit that will be less voluminous and can fit within the nucleus.
Chromatid
one half of a duplicated chromosome. Before replication, one chromosome is composed of one DNA molecule. In replication, the DNA molecule is copied, and the two molecules are known as chromatids.
Chromosomes
a threadlike structure of nucleic acids and protein found in the nucleus of most living cells, carrying genetic information in the form of genes.
