Mitosis Vocabulary Flashcards
Cell Cycle
When cells in an organism go through a cycle of growth, development, and division.
Mitosis
The process by which a parent cell divides into two identical daughter cells.
Interphase
a time during the cell cycle when the cell grows and develops
prophase
The first phase of mitosis during which chromosomes condense and the nuclear membrane starts to disappear
metaphase
The second phase of mitosis
Anaphase
The third phase of mitosis during which each chromosome is pulled apart by spindle fibers and the resulting daughter chromosomes are pulled to opposite sides of the cell.
Telophase
The fourth and final phase of mitosis during which a nuclear membrane forms around chromosomes on opposite sides of the cell and the chromosomes become unwound DNA in a formed nucleus.
Cytokinesis
A stage of the cell cycle during which the cell membrane pinched in and the cytoplasm divided into two daughter cells
Centriole
an organelle found near the nucleas in animal cells that form the sindle fibers that pull chromosomes apart during mitosis.
chromosome
the part of a cell that contains genes
DNA
The chemical found in cells that is the main component of chromosomes and carries genetic information
Centromere
A structure that holds the sister chromatids together.
Sister Chromatids
Two identical cells chromatids that make up a duplicated chromosomes.
Daughter Cell
The result of the cell cycle where two genetically identical cells are formed.
