Mitosis Vocab Flashcards
Mitosis
The process by which a parent cell divides into two identical daughter cells
Interphase
The stage of the cell cycle between periods of mitosis or meiosis in which the cell grows.
Prophase
The first phase in mitosis or meiosis during which chromosomes condense and the nuclear membrane starts to disappear.
Metophase
The second phase of mitosis or meiosis during which chromosomes line up along the center of the cell.
Anaphase
The third phase of mitosis or meiosis during which each chromosomes is pulled apart by spindle chromosomes are pulled to opposite side of the cell.
Telophase
The fourth and final phase of mitosis or meiosis during which a nuclear membrane forms around chromosomes on opposite sides of the cell and the chromosomes become unwound DNA in a newly formed nucleus.
Cytokinesis
A stage of the cell cycle during which the cell membrane pinched in and the cytoplasm divides into two daughter cells after mitosis or meiosis.
Centriole
An organelle found near the nucleus in animal cells that forms the spindle fibers that pull chromosomes apart during mitosis.
Chromosome
The part of a cell that contains genes.
DNA
The chemical found in cells that is the main component of chromosomes and carries genetic information.
