Mitosis (P-MAT) Flashcards
What is interphase?
Longest phase of mitosis - The stage before mitosis where the cells make a copy of their DNA.
What is prophase?
First stage of mitosis - The stage where the nucleolus disappears and when chromatin condenses into chromosomes.
What is metaphase?
Second stage of mitosis - When chromosomes attach to spindle fibers in the middle of the cell.
What is anaphase?
Third stage of mitosis - When the chromosomes move to opposite poles of the cell and the cell starts pulling apart.
What is telophase?
Most often considered the final stage of mitosis - When the nuclear membrane reforms and the chromosomes turn back into chromatin.
What is cytokinesis?
Sometimes considered the final stage of mitosis - when the cell finally splits into two identical daughter cells.
Mitosis occurs for three reasons, what are those reasons?
Repair, Growth, and Replacement.
How many diploid chromosomes are in the human body?
46.
How many haploid chromosomes are in the human body?
23.
What are the three stages of interphase (in order)?
Growth 1, Synthesis, and Growth 2.
What happens in the growth 1 stage of interphase?
The cell doubles its size to get ready for division.
What happens in the synthesis stage of interphase?
The cell makes a copy of it’s DNA.
What happens in the growth 2 stage of interphase?
The cell produces all final necessary structures.
What are centrioles?
Organelles that assemble the spindle fiber apparatus during prophase.
What is chromatin?
Thin, thread like DNA.
