MITOSIS + MEIOSIS Flashcards
What is interphase?
is the phase of the cell cycle in which a typical cell spends most of its life. During this phase, the cell copies its DNA in preparation for mitosis. It is a cell with a nucleus with squiggly lines inside
What is prophase?
The first phase of mitosis when the chromatin condenses into chromosomes and the centrioles become visible.
What is metaphase?
the chomosomes line up in the middle of the cell and become attached to the spindle fibres behind them at each end of the chromosome
What is anaphase?
The spindle fibres pull the chromosomes apart to opposite ends of the cell
What is telophase?
the chromatids reach opposite ends of the cell and a unwind. a nucleus is formed and the cell begins to split
What is prophase I in meiosis?
genetic material condenses into chromosomes in the nucleus and the centrioles become visible
What is metaphase I in meiosis?
chromosomes group together in homologous pairs, exchange genetic info, and line up in the middle while the spindle fibres attach to them
What is anaphase I in meiosis?
the homologous pairs are pulled to opposite sides of the cell by spindle fibres
What is telophase I in meiosis?
The two chromosomes group together and a nucleus is formed as the cell splits
What is prophase II in meiosis?
The nuclear membrane begins to dissolve in both cells and the centrioles become visible
What is metaphase II in meiosis?
The two chromosomes meet in the middle in both cells and attach to spindle fibres
What is anaphase II in meiosis?
in both cells, the spindle fibres pull the two chromotids apart to opposite ends of the cell
What is telophase II in meiosis?
The two chromatids group together and a nuclear membrane is formed around them as the cell splits, resulting in four haploid daughter cells.
