Mitosis and meiosis Flashcards
How many daughter cells does mitosis produce?
2
In which form of cell division are daughter cells genetically identical to parent cells?
Mitosis
What are the 5 stages of mitosis?
Interphase
Prophase
Metaphase
Anaphase
Telophase
What happens during Interphase?
DNA replicates and chromosomes are joined at the centromere
What is the longest stage of the cell cycle?
Interphase
In which stages of the cell cycle are chromosomes not visible under a lightmicroscope?
Interphase and telophase
What happens during prophase?
The nucleolus and nucelar envelope disappear. Centrioles begin moving to opposite poles and spindle fibres begin to extend from the centrioles
What happens during metaphase?`
Spindle fibres attach to the centromere and help to align the chromosomes along the equator of the cell
Why is it important that chromosomes align on the equator of the cell during metaphase?
It ensures that when chromosomes are separated, each new nucleus will receive 1 copy of each chromosome
What happens during anaphase?
Spindle fibres attached contract and pull sister chromatids apart to either pole.
How does the cell obtain the required energy for anaphase?
Mitochondria gather around spindle fibres
What happens during telophase?
Chromatids arrive at opposite ends of the cell and a new nuclear envelope reforms around the chromosomes
What is cytokineses?
Cell division
