Mitosis Flashcards
What is a chromosome?
DNA coiled around proteins that store and carry genetic information during cell replication and reproduction (mitosis and meiosis)
What is DNA?
Deoxyribose Nucleic Acid, a molecule that carries genetic information
Describe the cell cycle
The cycle of stages cells pass through to divide and produce new cells. Interphase is the longest stage where daughter cells prepare to become parent cells. This is followed by mitosis (PMAT) which involves DNA replication and cell division.
What is cytokinesis?
The final process of mitosis that results in cell membrane (=/- wall) to divide the cytoplasm in two creating two cells.
What is anaphase?
the stage of mitosis where the chromatids are separated and move to opposite ends of the cell along the spindles.
What is phenotype?
The appearance of an organism as a result of both the expression of its genotype and environmental influences.
What is genotype?
The genes present in an organism.
What happens during prophase?
Chromosomes coil tightly and become visible. The nuclear membrane disappears and the chromosomes spread throughout the cytoplasm.
What happens during telophase?
2 nuclei are formed, one at each pole, from each group of chromatids.
What are daughter cells?
the 2 new cells produced at the end of mitosis.
What is a parent cell?
A cell that is about to begin the process of mitosis.
What are the phases of mitosis in order?
Prophase, Metaphase, Anaphase, Telophase
