MITOSIS Flashcards
What are the main reasons cells go through MITOSIS?
- So the Organism can grow
2. To replace cells that die on their own or during injury
When cells divide to create two identical cells we call this:
MITOSIS
What is PROPHASE?
first step of mitosis, where the cell copies all its parts (especially DNA), organizes its DNA into CHROMOSOMES, and loses the membrane around the nucleus
What is METAPHASE?
the second step of mitosis, where the chromosomes line up in the middle of the cell
What is ANAPHASE?
the third step of mitosis, where one copy of chromosomes is pulled away to one side of the cell and the other set of chromosomes is pulled away to the opposite side of the cell
What are CENTRIOLES?
these cell parts use spindle fibers to pull the chromosomes to opposite sides of the cell during mitosis
What is TELOPHASE?
the fourth step of mitosis, where the nuclear membrane reforms around the chromosomes, the cell membrane pinches inward down the center, and the cell splits into two new identical cells
What is INTERPHASE?
this is the phase that cells are in most of their lives, where they are performing their normal life processes…not going through mitosis
What is a CHROMOSOME?
an organized bundle of DNA that forms during mitosis
