Mitosis Flashcards
What happens in mitosis
The division of cells from one cell that results in 2 new daughter cells
Mitosis is essential for growth, development, and tissue repair.
What happens in cytokinesis
Not part of mitosis, the cytoplasm is divided and 2 new daughter cells are formed
Cytokinesis usually occurs immediately after mitosis.
Chromatid
One of two identical parts or arms of a chromosome
Each chromatid is a copy of the chromosome and is joined to its sister chromatid at the centromere.
Centromere
Part of the chromosome where the 2 sister chromatids meet and is the attachment site of spindle fibers in cell division
The centromere plays a critical role in the movement of chromosomes during mitosis.
What happens in interphase
The time in between cell division where cells grow and carry out their functions
Interphase includes G1, S, and G2 phases.
What happens in prophase
First and longest phase of mitosis where chromosomes are visible, centrioles appear and move to opposite poles, the spindle starts to form, the sister chromatids pair up, and the nuclear envelope disappears
Prophase sets the stage for chromosome alignment in metaphase.
What happens in metaphase
2nd phase of mitosis during where chromosomes line up in center of the cell
This alignment is crucial for the equal distribution of chromosomes.
What happens in anaphase
3rd phase of mitosis during where the sister chromatids separate and chromosomes move to the opposite ends of the cell
Anaphase ensures that each daughter cell will receive an identical set of chromosomes.
What happens in telophase
4th and last phase of mitosis where the nuclear envelope forms and the spindle breaks apart
Telophase is followed by cytokinesis.
Chromatin
DNA that is spread out in thin strands
Chromatin allows DNA to be accessed for transcription and replication.
Centrioles
Structures that are used in cell division and help move chromosomes
Centrioles are essential for the formation of the spindle apparatus.
Spindle
Fan-like structure made of microtubules that help separate the chromosomes
The spindle apparatus is crucial for accurate chromosome segregation.
Centrosome
Region in which the centrioles lie that help organize the spindle fibers during cell division
Centrosomes play a vital role in ensuring proper chromosome movement.
