mitosis Flashcards

mitosis
the division of somatic cells which results in growth an repair
chromosomes
made up of DNA and protein
chromosomes make up the chromatin network inside the nucleus of all cells
zygote
sexual reproduction results in the formation of a single cell
protist
reproduce by simply dividing into two cells
binary fission
is made by asexual reproduction
interphase
preparation for the division of the nucleus , DNA doubles so that the genetic material is doubled in the chromatin network
cytokinesis
the division of the cytoplasm
prophase
the chromatin network unwinds to form visible chromosomes. Each chromosome is made up of two identical parts called chromotids because of DNA replication that are attached to each other by a centrosome, the centrosome spilts into centrioles that start moving to poles. The nuclear membrane and the nucleolus start to disappear
anaphase
when the spindle fibres contact , each chromosome splits at the centromere and its two chromatids are pulled apart towards opposite ends of the cell. Each chromatid is actually a single stranded chromosome since DNA replication took place
metaphase
The chromosomes arrange themselves along the middle of the cell , in a single row and the centromeres attach to the spindle fibres
animal cell in mitosis
in prophase the centrosome forms spindle fibres
telophase
Two groups of chromosomes are now present , one at each end of the cell.
animal cell in mitosis
cytokinesis occurs by a constriction of the cell membrane until two new cells are formed
plant cell in mitosis
in prophase the cytoplasm forms the spindle fibres
plant cells in mitosis
cytokensis occurs by the laying down of a new cell wall in the equatorial region of the cell
