mitosis Flashcards
where does a cell spend most of its time
interphase
what happens during interphase (3)
the cell grows, replicates its DNA, centrioles also replicate (animal cells)
what is mitosis
the process of a cell making a copy of itself
what are the 4 steps of mitosis
prophase, metaphase, anaphase, telophase (PMAT)
what is mitosis vital for
growth, repair and replacement of damaged or worn out cells
what happens in prophase (4)
nuclear membrane breaks down, centrioles move to opposite poles of the cell, spindle fibres form, chromatin shortens and thickens
what are chromosomes
chromosomes consist of 2 identical rods called sister chromatids and are connected by the centromere
where are the sister chromatids connected by
the centromere
what happens in metaphase
spindle fibres from the centrioles attach to the centromeres and move the sister chromatids to the equator of the cell
what happens in anaphase
chromosomes are separated because the spindle fibres retract and move to opposite poles of the cell
what happens in telophase (4)
spindle fibres disappear, nuclear membrane reappears, cell membrane pinches, chromosomes become chromatin again
what happens in cytokinesis
the cell membrane pinches together and divides the cytoplasm between the daughter cells
