Mitosis Flashcards
Cell Cycle
When cells in an organism go through a cycle of growth, development, and division
Mitosis
The process by which a parent divides into two identical daughter
Interphase
The stage of the cell cycle between periods of mitosis in which the cell grows
Prophase
The first phase of mitosis during the chromosomes condense and the nuclear membrane starts to appear
Metaphase
The second phase of mitosis during which chromosomes up along the center of the cell
Anaphase
The third phase of mitosis during which each chromosome is pulled apart by spindle fibers and the resulting daughter chromosomes are pulled into opposite sides of the cell
Telophase
The fourth and final phase of mitosis during which a nuclear membrane forms around chromosomes on opposite sides of the cell and the chromosomes become unwound DNA in a newly formed nucleus
Cytokinesis
A stage of the cell cycle during which the cell membrane is pinched in and the cytoplasm divides into two daughters cells after mitosis
Centriole
An organelle found near the nucleus in animal cells that forms the spindle fibers that pull chromosomes apart during mitosis
Chromosome
The part of the cell that contains genes
DNA
The chemical found in cells that is in the main component of chromosomes and carries genetic info
Centromere
A structure that holds the sister chromatids together
Sister Chromatids
Two identical chromatids that make up a duplicated chromosome
