Mitosis Flashcards
Cell Cycle
When cells in an organism go through a cycle of growth, development, and division
Interphase
The stage of the cell cycle between periods of mitosis in which the cell grows
Sister Chromatids
Two identical chromatids that make up a duplicated chromosome
Centromere
A structure that holds the sister chromatids together
Centriole
An organelle found near the nucleus in animal cells that forms the spindle fibers that pull chromosomes apart during mitosis
Chromosomes
The part of a cell that contains genes
DNA
The chemical found in cells that is the main component of chromosomes and carries genetic information
Daughter Cells
The result of the cell cycle where two genetically identical cells are formed
Prophase
The first phase of mitosis during which chromosomes condense and the nuclear membrane starts to disappear
Mitosis
The process by which a parent cell divides into a two identical daughter cells
Metaphase
The second phase of mitosis during which chromosomes line up along the center of the cell
Anaphase
The third phase of mitosis during which each chromosome is pulled apart by spindle fibers and the resulting daughter chromosomes are pulled to opposite side of the cell
Telophase
The fourth and final phase of mitosis during which a nuclear membrane forms around chromosomes on opposite sides of the cell and the chromosomes become unwound DNA in a newly formed nucleus
Cytokinesis
A stage of cell cycle during which the cell membrane pinched in and the cytoplasm divides into two daughter cells after mitosis
