Mitosis Flashcards
What are the 4 steps of mitosis?
Prophase
Metaphase
Anaphase
Telophase
what is before Mitosis?
Interphase
What is after Mitosis?
cytokenesis.
what is the first phase of Mitosis? what happens?
prophase is the first phase.
Mitosis begins (nucleus begins to divide)
Centrioles (or the poles of the cell) appear and begin to move to opposite ends of the cell.
Spindle fibers form between the poles.
Chromosomes become visible
Nuclear membrane breaks down
Chromatids attached to the centromere.
What is the second phase of Mitosis? what happens?
metaphase is the second phase of mitosis
Chromatids (or pairs of chromosomes) attach to the spindle fibers.
Chromosomes meet in the middle.
What is the third phase of Mitosis? what happens?
Anaphase is the third phase of mitosis
Chromatids separate and begin to move to opposite ends of the cell.
Centrioles act as anchors for the spindle fibers to pull the chromatids to opposite ends of the cell. They attach on the chromosomes at the centromere.
What is the fourth phase of Mitosis? what happens?
Telophase is the fourth and final phase of mitosis
Two new nuclei form
Chromosomes appear as chromatin (threads rather than rods)
Mitosis ends. This is the end of nuclear cell division, but cell the is not completely divided yet.
Nuclear membrane starts to reform
what happens during cytokinesis?
Cell membrane moves inward to create two daughter cells - each with its own nucleus with identical chromosomes. The cytoplasm finishes dividing and finishes cellular division.
What is an acronym to remember the steps of mitosis?
PMAT
do you know what each step looks like?
hopefully. look in ur notes for the picture
