Mitochondria and Peroxisomes Flashcards
Endosymbiotic theory: origin of mitochondria
Mitochondria present in all eukaryotic organisms.
The Earth was colonized by bacteria 2 billion years ago
All of mitochondria can be traced back to one prokaryotic cell which was engulfed by primitive form of eukaryotic cell 2 cells formed a relationship.
Prokaryote divided inside their host producing daughter cells increasing their numbers. When host cell divided these prokaryotic daughter cells would’ve been passed on when the host cell divided. Functions performed by prokaryotic invader likely convert a selection advantage to host cell. Host cell gave rise to all eukaryotic organisms.
Without mitochondria and ancestor it is unlikely that complex life would have ever evolved.
