Mites Flashcards
Name at least 7 surface mites
Psoroptes Chorioptes Otodectes cynotis Cheytiella Trombicula Dermanyssus Ornithonyssus Chirodiscoides Listrophorus
Fur mites
Chirodiscoides (guinea pig) and Listrophorus (rabbit). Found on hairs ather than skin. Few signs in GPs.
Spread by direct contact bedding, hair, debris
Ornithonyssus
Northern fowl mite. surface.
Blood feeder. Causes matting, scabbing, decreased production, anaemia, infection…
look grey-black on feathers.
Dermanyssus gallinae
Chicken red mite. Surface
Major parasite. Live off the bird but then takes blood meal at night.
Condition loss, decreased production, anaemia
Cheytiella
Surface.
largely free living, often predatory.
yarsurgi, blakei and parasitivorax (dog, cat, rabbit)
scaling, pruritus, can be more severe if already ill. ‘Walking dandruff’
characteristic waist and large palps.
Trombicula
Chigger/harvest mites, surface
free living. only the larvae are parasitic. Bright red-orange, 0.2mm larvae.
ground living so affect legs, belly, face/head of grazers. Hypersensitivity to bites causes pruritus, erythema, scratching.
Otodectes cynotis
Ear mites in carnivores. surface.
Very common, often subclinical.
Head shaking, ear scratching. Can cause severe irritation and secondary infections. Diagnosis- see mite with otoscope, or microscopy (swab the characteristic black crusty wax)
Chorioptes
Most common cause of mange in cattle and horses. Irritant. loss of production
Psoroptes
ovis, equi, cuniculi..
sheep scab, rabbit ear mites. often very irritant- rubbing trauma…worse than Chorioptes.
segmented pretarsus with funnel shaped sucker
Name 5 burrowing mites
Sarcoptes, Trixacarus caviae, Notoedres cati, Knemidocoptes, Demodex
Sarcoptes scabei
One species, multiple strains. zoonotic. highly contagious. intense pruritus.
females burrow into skin and form tunnels, where they lay eggs.
terminal anus
How are burrowing mites often identified?
Anus. eg sarcoptes- terminal
Trixacars/Notoedres- dorsal
Knemidocoptes- ventral
demodex is cigar shaped with stumpy legs
Knemidocoptes
scaly face/foot/tassel foot in birds. highly contagious. inflammation and crusting, lameness….
